Pregraphity research group is developing research projects led by postdoctoral researchers within the framework of the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101209748.

Dra. Ségolène Vandevelde

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Researcher International Institute of Prehistoric Research of Cantabria (IIIPC) | PreGraphity Group.

An anthropologist by training, specialising in archaeology and geoarchaeology. Her research work lies at the intersection between the natural and human sciences, focusing on the dynamics of occupation of prehistoric sites.

She has developed a pioneering method called fuliginochronology, which consists of studying the layers of soot trapped in calcareous concretions to reconstruct the rhythms of human occupation with high temporal resolution. She has applied this method in studies on the Neanderthal/Sapiens transition and, currently, in the dating and frequency of use of rock art sites.

Areas of Specialisation

  • Archaeology and Interdisciplinarity: Anthropology, ethnoarchaeology and archaeometry.
  • Spatial Dynamics: Mobility, territories and occupation.
  • Fire and Art: Rock art and pyroarchaeology.
  • Chronology: High-resolution chronology and dating.
  • Professional Ethics: Ethics and deontology in archaeological practice.

ARTISTS Project

Anthropogenic Residue Traces In Speleothems: new methodology for exploring Temporality of human use in rock art Sites.

Funded by the European Commission under the prestigious HORIZON-MSCA-2024-PF programme, this project seeks to unravel the specific rhythms of use of caves with rock art and their role in the nomadism of past societies.

Main objectives:

  • Identification of remains: Characterise anthropogenic (charred) residues in Spain and France using low-impact micro-sampling protocols.
  • Microchronology: Document the temporality of cave use through soot deposits in speleothems.
  • Anthropological synthesis: Compare the data obtained with ethnographic knowledge about the dynamics of occupation of decorated sites.
