The project entitled “Scientific Virtual Reality for the study and dissemination of artistic creation scenarios in Palaeolithic caves (RealCave Art)” is part of the call for PROJECTS PROOF OF CONCEPT of the State Programme to Promote Scientific-Technical Research and its Transfer of the State Plan for Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research 2021-2023 within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

This type of project aims to promote the practical application and transfer to society of the knowledge generated in previous R&D&I projects, as is the case of our ongoing Before Art project.

RealCave Art consists of the application of the archaeological information obtained in the course of the Before Art project as the basis for the virtual reconstruction of artistic creation scenarios in Palaeolithic caves, as well as the creation of immersive experiences in Scientific Virtual Reality.

Specifically, significant spaces with Palaeolithic cave art will be reconstructed in three caves on the Iberian Peninsula: Atxurra (Bizkaia), Nerja and Navarro (Malaga). By means of 3D documentation of the underground spaces and the simulation of prehistoric lighting systems, both researchers and the general public will be able to have the immersive experience of contemplating cave art in the same way as it was done in prehistoric times.
